Ward's Best Practices for
Centerboard, Rudder
and Skeg
Controls Is everything labeled clearly? Hull Is it smooth and fair? Jib Stay Tuning First make sure the mast is in the middle of the boat (side to side). Then check the balance of the boat (fore and aft position of the mast). With average jib stay tension at 2" of sag, in its usual 5-10 KT location. Rudder pressure (weather helm) should be minimum. If it's not, try pulling the jib stay forward. Note, you must ease the runners and this will also lift the aft end of the boom, too much of that is bad. Straight Downwind
Rig Tuning (Boat on land) Again check mast position side to side. Ease runners and lowers so the head stay can bend the mast forward with the mast on center and even tension being shared by all stays. Take special note. That when sailing in this position the vang must be eased enough so as to not put too much tension on the vang track, or leech of the main (the worst result could be a broken boom). Be sure to mark all these settings. Straight Downwind Rig Tuning (Boat on land) Hull Tuning Any time there is something moving or flexing that shouldn't it can be considered a wasted motion one that could be better used to propel the boat forward.
